Brand Stories: Q&A with Castaner
Each month we will interview one of our brands to find out more about the inspiration, heritage and designs they create. First up is Castaner, the Spanish espadrille brand who invented the wedge style espadrille. Often imitated, but never duplicated, their stunning designs adorn the feet of Hollywood and real-life royalty. Here we chat with Jess from the marketing team about the brand's incredible history and plans for the future...
Tell us about the heritage of Castaner
The first Castañer atelier was founded in 1927. Since then, we have turned a popular form of footwear into a sophisticated product closely associated with design and fashion.
Our encounter with Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s went down in the history of world fashion, and together we created the first wedge espadrille.
What makes the Castaner espadrille iconic?
Today, after 90 years, our product has a worldwide reach, but our essence remains as authentic as it was in 1927 and what makes a Castañer espadrille iconic is the tradition, craftsmanship and natural materials.
How has the style evolved?
Despite its popular roots, this shoe is a fashion symbol that has graced the feet of countless celebrities. Artists, actors, models and aristocrats around the world have worn our espadrilles.
Castañer, created the wedge espadrille model at the request of Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s, which has gone on to become a must-have in every summer collection.
Which is the bestseller?
We introduced two models that made history, Carina and Pablo. Both our most iconic models.

We have launched an amazing collaboration with the Italian fashion house Missoni. We’ve had so much fun working together, two family-owned businesses that work with artisanal processes. The collection is already in our stores, it is colourful and timeless.
